Carey and Scott Lead SA to Commanding One-Day Cup Victory Over NSW

South Australia continued their excellent start to the domestic cricket season with a commanding six-wicket victory over New South Wales in their one-day cup clash. The win at the Adelaide Oval on Tuesday keeps South Australia at the top of the table in the 50-over competition, as they delivered a clinical performance against last season’s runners-up.

The foundation for the victory was laid in the field, as South Australia's bowlers stifled NSW's batting lineup, dismissing them for a modest total of 197 in 46 overs. South Australia’s bowlers maintained pressure by taking wickets at regular intervals, preventing any substantial partnerships from forming.

Harry Conway led the charge with an impressive 3-27 from his 9.3 overs, while Jason Sangha contributed significantly, picking up 2-16, including the critical dismissals of Nic Maddinson and Oliver Davies.

Liam Scott also played a vital role, taking 2-31 in his eight overs to further restrict the NSW batting order. Despite the tough conditions, NSW's middle and lower order batters managed to add some runs, with Matthew Gilkes and captain Jack Edwards top-scoring with 35 each.

Chasing 198, South Australia had an early scare as Jack Nisbet struck twice in quick succession, removing openers Mackenzie Harvey and Daniel Drew with consecutive deliveries, leaving SA in a precarious 2-8.

However, Test wicketkeeper Alex Carey steadied the innings with a brilliant 75 off 63 balls, showcasing his aggressive style and making a strong case for a return to Australia’s white-ball squads. His innings, filled with crisp boundaries, shifted momentum back to South Australia.

After Carey’s dismissal, Jake Lehmann (46 not out) and man-of-the-match Liam Scott (42 not out) guided South Australia across the finish line with a composed partnership, cementing the team’s hold on the top position and giving fans renewed hope. Scott’s all-round performance, combining his crucial two-wicket haul with a steady hand in the chase, was instrumental in SA’s success.

Beyond their one-day dominance, South Australia also sits second in the Sheffield Shield standings, with two wins and a draw in their first three matches.

The teams will take a short break before returning to the Adelaide Oval on Thursday to resume their rivalry in a four-day Shield match, where South Australia will look to continue their winning ways across formats.
