Wigan Athletic fans will always remember Graeme Jones, whose impact on the club has spanned decades. The former Latics striker, who still holds the club record for most league goals in a single season (31 goals in 1996-97), was instrumental in Wigan’s fourth-tier title win under John Deehan. His later return as assistant manager to Roberto Martinez also marked a golden era for the club, culminating in Wigan’s historic FA Cup victory at Wembley in 2013.
Since leaving Wigan, Jones has built a varied coaching career. He followed Martinez to Everton and then to the Belgium national team, before joining his hometown club, Newcastle United, in 2018. During his time at Newcastle, Jones developed a close professional relationship with defender Paul Dummett. When Dummett became a free agent after leaving Newcastle this summer, Jones’s connection to Wigan proved invaluable in helping broker a deal to bring the experienced defender to the Latics on a short-term contract.
Wigan’s current manager, Shaun Maloney—who once played under Jones at Wigan and later worked alongside him on the Belgian coaching staff—expressed his gratitude for Jones’s role in the signing. “We got some great feedback from Graeme on Paul, both as a player and a person,” Maloney shared.
“He said Paul’s personality is exceptional and that he’s incredibly dedicated—only missing three training sessions over the past two years. The recommendations were really high, and I think we’re pretty fortunate to have him.”
Maloney emphasized that Dummett’s signing brings more than just skill on the field. “We’re a very young squad, and Paul’s experience is going to be as valuable off the field as it is on it,” he noted. “He turned down more attractive offers elsewhere to join us, which shows his commitment to our team.”
Paul Dummett’s Role in Strengthening Wigan’s Defense
With Dummett’s addition, Wigan has addressed a crucial need in their defense. The left-back position was under strain due to injuries, with Luke Chambers out for an extended period and Luke Robinson only recently returning from a seven-month injury hiatus. Dummett’s arrival brings essential cover and stability to the left side of Wigan’s defense.
Maloney is optimistic about what Dummett will contribute in the short term. “He had only one training session before Saturday’s game, but he already fits well with the team,” Maloney said. “It was a big decision for him, and he turned down higher-paying opportunities to join us. He’s exactly what we need.”
The Power of Connections and Legacy in Football
This signing highlights how relationships and legacy can still play a significant role in football transfers. Graeme Jones’s longstanding ties with Wigan, combined with his positive experience with Dummett at Newcastle, created the foundation for this valuable acquisition. Dummett’s decision to join the Latics also speaks to the club’s enduring appeal, bolstered by leaders like Maloney and Jones who have helped shape its history.
Wigan Athletic fans will hope that Dummett’s experience and leadership will strengthen the club's defense and inspire the team to achieve their goals this season.
