Rogers Joins England Squad as Eight Players Withdraw Due to Injury

Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers has been called up to England’s senior squad for the November Nations League matches after a wave of injuries led to the withdrawal of eight key players. England’s interim manager, Lee Carsley, brought in several reinforcements, including West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen, Everton center-back Jarrad Branthwaite, Newcastle full-back Tino Livramento, and Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, to cover the sudden absences.

Chelsea duo Levi Colwill and Cole Palmer, Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, Manchester City’s Phil Foden and Jack Grealish, Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Southampton's Aaron Ramsdale are all sidelined due to injuries, leaving the team shorthanded ahead of their crucial fixtures. England will face Greece on 14 November and the Republic of Ireland on 17 November in the Nations League.

The injuries have shaken England’s lineup. Alexander-Arnold was substituted off after just 25 minutes in Liverpool’s victory over Aston Villa, while Saka and Rice both suffered injuries in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea. Saka exited late in the game, and Rice was replaced in the 71st minute.

Grealish, meanwhile, hasn’t played for Manchester City since 20 October, yet was included in Carsley’s initial squad—a decision that Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola openly questioned. Ramsdale is reportedly dealing with a fractured finger sustained during Southampton’s clash with Wolves, which could keep him on the sidelines for a significant period.

While Colwill, Palmer, and Foden all played full matches for their clubs over the weekend, the specific reasons for their withdrawal from England’s squad remain unclear.

Morgan Rogers’ promotion marks his first call-up to the senior team after a strong season start with Aston Villa, where he’s scored three goals and provided two assists in 11 appearances under Unai Emery. Originally set to join the England Under-21s, the 22-year-old’s progress has earned him this unexpected but well-deserved opportunity to represent his country at the highest level.

This squad selection will be Carsley’s last as interim manager before Thomas Tuchel assumes the role permanently in January 2025.
